The current world chess champion, Magnus Carlsen, refused to play in the match for the world chess crown with Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi – due to a “lack of motivation”, according to the Norwegian.

Carlsen informed the International Chess Federation (FIDE) about this.

Carlsen, who has defended the world title four times, said.

With Nepomniachtchi, the Norwegian played and won the world chess crown a year ago.

Due to the refusal of Magnus Carlsen in the 2023 match, the Russian will meet with the Chinese Ding Liren. He placed second in the Candidates’ Tournament, which Ian Nepomniachtchi won, which gave him the right to participate in the world chess crown challenge.

Earlier, Carlsen stated that he would agree to play if Alireza Firouzja, the Iranian-French chess player, wins the Candidates’ Tournament.

The news was commented by Vladimir Potkin, coach of Nepomniachtchi:

They commented on today’s news in the Federation Council. Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the International Relations Committee, proposed depriving Magnus Carlsen of the title of world champion and handing the chess crown to Nepomniachtchi.
