Already today, on the night of April 3-4, the 64th Grammy Awards ceremony, which will bring together the leading representatives of the music industry, will take place. But we’re not following this event just to find out who will get the coveted prize. In its 64 years of existence, the Grammy red carpet has become a fashion statement arena. And if at the Oscars the dress code is more traditional, then the music award gives complete freedom to the imagination.
That’s why from year to year the red carpet is getting brighter, uglier and more revealing. For example, last year we praised the male look – Harry Styles in a naked body Gucci leather jacket, rapper DaBaby in a snow-white Chanel suit, BTS discreet but stylish Louis Vuitton. And the girls were not left behind – only Dua Lipa changed three appearances in the evening (and all of Versace). How the artists will surprise us this time, we can only guess.
As we count the hours until the ceremony, we invite you to recall iconic images from Grammy history.
Bow Tie Top Cher (1974)

In the 1970s, Cher’s popularity grew at a dizzying pace. Their songs topped the music charts, their movie roles brought status awards, and their red carpet appearances were considered a separate art form. One of the iconic images was at the Grammys. In 1974, the singer appeared in a white top with a butterfly embroidered with sequins (by the way, the same element was in Cher’s hairstyle) and a translucent cape.
By the way, almost forty years later, this image was repeated by another diva of Armenian origin – Kim Kardashian. She generally took inspiration quite often and quoted Cher’s iconic outfits.

R’n’B trio TLC in Special Dolce & Gabanna (1996)

In 1996, the group received awards for “Best R&B Album” and “Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group”. For the award, the trio came up with a white look – trousers with low-waisted chiffon inserts, satin tops and, of course, sneakers.
The girl image was in many ways ahead of its time and influenced not only red carpet traditions but also the ways you express your femininity. Designed by fashion house Dolce & Gabanna, TLC’s suits are the perfect combination of street style rebelliousness and sophistication.
Britney Spears in Randolph Duke (2000)

In the early 2000s, Britney Spears was the queen of the pop scene, style icon and role model. Each and every one of their new releases has been watched with bated breath. One of them took place at the Grammy Awards in 2000. Then the cult album Oops!… I Did It Again just came out, Britney herself was only 18 years old, but it was already announced in the main nominations. Despite the fact that Spears went without an award that evening, the image of the singer forever went down in history. At the Grammys red carpet, she showed up in a luxurious white Randolph Duke gown, complete with an Oscar de la Renta fur cape. All of this was remotely like the Marilyn Monroe era and very different from anything we’re used to seeing Britney.
It is not surprising that this image of the main diva of the 2000s was subsequently quoted more than once. One of the most striking is the appearance of Lizzo at the same Grammy Awards. Then she stepped onto the carpet in a Versace corset dress with a snow-white cape.

J. Lo at Versace (2000)

The 2000 award gave us another image, and at that time it deservedly received a cult title. We’re talking about Jennifer Lopez’s debut in a blue-green Versace dress with an over-neckline, which was initially thought to be extremely unsuccessful and was rushed to be added to any worst apparel rating. 20 years later, he repeated this image, appearing on the Versace show.

Lady Gaga at Space Armani Privé (2010)

Lady Gaga definitely deserves the title of the ugliest singer of the XXI century. Her looks are always a wild mix of cosmic silhouettes, unexpected elements and, of course, crazy platform shoes. In 2010, for her Grammy debut, Gaga wore a light purple Armani Privé gown with rings on the skirt reminiscent of planetary orbits.
Rihanna at Giambattista Valli Couture (2015)

Seven years ago, the bold and ugly Rihanna made an unexpectedly romantic appearance at the music awards. The singer chose a puffy pink Giambattista Valli Couture dress for the red carpet. This version of Riri pretty much became the most discussed event of the award. And all because of the size of the dress – it was so large that only Rihanna could be seen from above when everyone took their seats in the hall. A huge number of memes immediately appeared on the web, and digital creators ironically compared themselves to Rihanna and everyone else to ex-boyfriends. In a word, the dress went down in history. Although not in the traditional way.
