Rafael Caro Quintero, whose role in the 1985 murder and torture of an American drug agent, appeared in the Netflix drama series. Narcos: Mexicocaptured by a joint law enforcement team.
Quintero was co-founder of the Guadalajara cartel, considered one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in Mexico in the 1980s.
The Netflix series focused on the early days of the Mexican drug cartels. Various factions have merged and the business has grown from a loosely organized group of producers and distributors to a sophisticated multinational. Tenoch Huerta played the role of Quintero in the series.
The violent group was known for torturing and killing Drug Enforcement Administration agent Kiki Camarena. Dear Quintero was among those sentenced to death.
Caro Quintero spent 28 years in prison for Camarena’s murder, but was released in 2013 on technical grounds by a Mexican judge who embarrassed the previous government. Then he went missing and he is believed to have returned to drug trafficking as part of the Sinaloa cartel, US officials said. He was on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list and had a $ 20 million bounty on his head, a record for drug trafficking.
“This is probably one of the most significant arrests of the last decade in terms of importance to the DEA,” said Mike Vigil, former head of international operations for the DEA.
The US government welcomed Caro Quintero’s arrest and requested his extradition. “This is huge,” White House Senior Advisor for Latin America Juan González said on Twitter.
The Mexican Navy said Caro Quintero was captured in the municipality of Choi in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, one of Mexico’s drug trafficking centers. He was found in the bushes by a military-trained investigator named Max, the Navy said.
