Arnold Skolnick, the designer of one of the most iconic images of the 20th-century Woodstock festival poster, died on June 15 in Amherst, Massachusetts at the age of 85. His second son, Alexander Skolnik, the cause of death was respiratory failure.
Skolnik was not a huge fan of rock music when he created the poster in a matter of days. Skolnik was 32 at the time and created the message “Peace, Love and Music” with the image of a guitar neck with a white bird perched on it. Under it was the slogan “3 days of peace and music”.
“I took it (to the festival producers) on Monday afternoon,” said Skolnik, who received the order the previous Thursday. “It was just another job, but he became famous.”
At first, Skolnik played with the idea of a flute for the picture, but later switched to the guitar. As for the bird, Skolnik says many people thought it was a pigeon. But his inspiration was the cat birds he performed in Haven Island, New York. “I forgot to tell the printer that the tip should be black,” Skolnik revealed, “and it’s a red tip.”
Skolnik received $ 12,000 for the work, split with the copywriter. He dated Woodstock for a day, but he left before he started raining.
His sons Alexander and Peter survive from his first marriage to Irishman Jay. Skolnik also leaves behind his nephews Moses and Charna and his sister Helen Rothschild.
