Dear members,

The Sunday show for the 94th Academy Awards was supposed to be a celebration of the many people in our community who did great work last year. We are nervous and angry that these moments were overshadowed by the candidate’s unacceptable and damaging behavior on stage. To put it bluntly, we condemn the actions of Mr. Smith that took place on Sunday night.

As reflected in our Rules of Procedure, the Academy Board will now decide on appropriate action for Mr. Smith. As regulated by California law for members of nonprofits such as academia and outlined in our Code of Conduct, this should lead to a formal process that may take several weeks.

We will keep you informed of any developments, but please respect your board of directors, academy staff, and that this process works as planned and instructed. You can be assured that the Board of Governors will guide this process appropriately and respectfully for all involved in meeting Academy standards.

Thanks,
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
