The Italian theater La Scala opposed the “cancellation” of Russian culture against the background of the military special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. According to theater manager Dominik Meyer, the new season will begin with Modest Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov. Russian artists take part in the opera, and Ildar Abdrazakov will play the role of Boris Godunov.
Meyer added that he took responsibility for this decision. – TASS quotes him.
Earlier, the Russian opera diva Anna Netrebko returned to the stage of La Scala, publicly condemning the military special operation. After that, Netrebko faced harsh criticism in Russia: domestic theaters ended relations with him, and many of his fans accused him of treason. Despite an open letter condemning the special operation, the singer has yet to return to New York’s Metropolitan Opera House.
After the start of the Russian Federation’s special military operations in Ukraine, Russians and Russian culture began to be “canceled” all over the world. For example, the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam was renamed Amsterdam’s Dutch Heritage, and they even denounced the music of composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, which was performed during the presentation of Kirill Serebrennikov’s film Tchaikovsky’s Wife at the Cannes Film Festival.
Russian athletes also faced “cancellation”, which began to be suspended from participation in international competitions.
Many popular and cultural figures opposed it: among them, Russian ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa, who lived abroad.
