Director Sam Levinson shot the upcoming third season of Euphoria entirely on VistaVision, the pioneer of IMAX.

Using VistaVision is already expensive; cameras are bulky, which means you have to take shorter shots. For a weekly series, this is a huge logistical and financial challenge. It’s quite possible that Levinson picked up on the VistaVision trend that’s gaining popularity in Hollywood.

The VistaVision film format returned after a hiatus of more than 60 years last year with Brady Corbett’s Brutalist. This was the first film shot entirely with VistaVision cameras since Marlon Brando’s One-Eyed Jacks (1961). Yorgos Lanthimos started this trend to some extent by shooting parts of his 2022 movie Beggars in this format, but few people noticed or even mentioned it at the time. For some reason, it was Corbet’s film that started this trend this decade.

It’s unclear whether this signals a long-term resurgence or is just a temporary trend, but for now VistaVision is very popular. Although there are only a few VistaVision cameras in the world, that hasn’t stopped major filmmakers from using their clout to shoot in this old-school format.

Meanwhile, the Euphoria star recently made her debut at the Victoria’s Secret show.
