International luxury hotel chain Marriott is leaving Russia due to new sanctions against the country, according to a statement published on the company’s official website.

In early March, the company closed its office in Russia, suspended the opening of new hotels in the country and froze business development and investment projects in the Russian market, where it has been operating for 25 years.

Representatives of the hotel chain noted that they will continue to deal with employees in Russia and Ukraine, and will provide employment at Marriott outside of these countries. The company has allocated one million dollars for relocation, food and transportation, medical and legal support, and also arranged free accommodation for Ukrainian refugees in 85 hotels of the chain.

Meanwhile, the head of the Federal Tourism Agency, Zarina Doğuzova, wrote on the Telegram channel that all Marriott hotels will continue to operate in Russia.

The first five-star luxury hotel of the Marriott chain was opened in Moscow on Tverskaya Street in 1997. In 2019, Forbes published a rating of the largest hotel chains in Russia, in which Marriott International took first place.

Earlier, Izvestia reported on Marriott and Hilton’s plans to leave Russia altogether. The source of the publication suggested that one of the reasons for this decision may be a sharp decrease in the flow of foreign guests, who can get a room for 60-100 thousand rubles per day.
