Adele’s hit song Million Years Ago has been officially removed from the airwaves. According to the court decision, the song, released in 2015, is an illegal copy of another song.
Adele reportedly copied Brazilian singer-songwriter Toninho Gerais’ 1996 song Mulheres. According to The Guardian and The Times, it was decided to remove Adele’s song from all radio stations and streaming services after a Brazilian judge sided with the 62-year-old artist.
According to the court order, Adele’s song must be removed from radio, television, streaming services and other platforms worldwide. “Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music will immediately and globally cease using, reproducing, editing, distributing or commercializing the song Million Years Ago in any way, whether physical or as a digital support, streaming or sharing platform,” the official statement read. Adele herself has yet to comment on the situation.
A plagiarism case was filed against the singer in 2021. Interestingly, Toninho Gerais was not the first to start arguing with the singer over the authorship of the book Million Years Ago. According to The Guardian, fans in Turkey claimed that Adele “stole” Kurdish singer Ahmet Kaya’s 1985 song Acilara Tutunmak.
