We heard many new words this year, but according to Gramota.ru, the word of 2024 was “air”. The portal writes that more than four hundred philologists from different cities of our country participated in the expert voting.
The top three were determined in the first hours, but the “air” could not immediately overtake the others. Thus, this word ranked second with 256 points, “skuf” ranked second with 229 points, and “arrival” ranked third with 124 points.
The portal’s linguists state that “weather” appeared in the Russian language a few years ago, but in 2024 it became popular, showed a steady increase and became known outside youth groups.
Like last year, the word of the year will be added to the Gramota.ru metadictionary as a result of recognition of its linguistic significance by native English speakers and experts. The portal’s experts have prepared examples of use and interpretations of the new word in different contexts.
Earlier, lexicographers from the Collins dictionary chose the main word of 2024, which, in their opinion, rightfully became Brat, the name of the album Charlie XCX. Read more about this here.
