Five years ago, local residents living along the Svendborgsund Canal in the Baltic Sea noticed a lone male bottlenose dolphin swimming towards them and settling nearby, according to the journal Bioacoustics. This finding was rare as these types of dolphins do not usually live in the area but travel in flocks.
Soon the sea creature began to attract the attention of scientists who wanted to understand why the dolphin lived here and with whom it communicated. They dipped the microphone into water to see if the animal, which locals call Delle, made any sounds.
To their surprise, the research team discovered that Delle was making a lot of noise. From December 2022 to February 2023, they counted 10,833 copies. The recordings included sounds associated with communication between dolphins; This was a sign that he was talking to himself. Researchers noted that the dolphin continued to talk even when no one was nearby.
