Broadway will dim its marquee lights to honor late Harry Potter star Maggie Smith. Deadline reports this, citing Shubert Organization Chairman and CEO Robert E. Wankel.

“Maggie Smith was an extraordinary talent whose artistry graced both stage and screen with unparalleled depth and intelligence. His legacy as an extraordinary actor and inspiration to countless artists is indelible. Broadway joins fans around the world to mourn his loss and celebrate his extraordinary contributions. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone affected by his work,” Robert said.

The theater’s owners announced that the ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 7 at 6:45 pm ET. Meanwhile, on Broadway, in commemoration of the death of leading figures in the theater world, the lights on posters are dimmed as a sign of general grief, which usually lasts for a minute and begins just before the evening performances.
As a reminder, Maggie Smith died on August 27 at the age of 89. Citing the artist’s publicist, the AP reported: “Maggie Smith, who won an Oscar in 1969 for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and won new fans in the 21st century for her role as the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, has died.”
Maggie Smith has won two Oscars, seven BAFTAs, three Golden Globes, three Emmys, a Tony Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She was named Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1989 and was inducted into the US Actors Hall of Fame in 1994.
