Scientists at Stanford University concluded that artificial intelligence has learned to lie to win arguments. The research was published on the official website of the university.
Michael Tomtz, professor of political science at the Stanford School of Arts and Sciences, gave a talk on using artificial intelligence to create propaganda. During an experiment in which chatbots simulated elections and advertising campaigns, the AI quickly began using misinformation, aggressive rhetoric, and even outright deception to win, he said. This is subject to the condition of “being honest and helpful”.
It turns out that AI is quite capable of adopting manipulative behavior from humans to achieve certain goals. The danger is also that the texts generated by the neural network influence people almost as much as the propaganda created by professional writers.
Tomz also noted that election results, like many other events, often depend on small factors, meaning even a small impact can be significant in the outcome. Additionally, their results likely underestimate the persuasiveness of AI-generated propaganda for several reasons.
