The official mascot of the Catholic Church next year will be the anime mascot Luce, which means “light” in Italian. The character is intended to appeal to a young audience and guide visitors through the holy year.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella described the mascot as part of the Vatican’s goal to engage with “popular culture so loved by young people.” The mascot will make its debut this week at Lucca Comics and Games, the famous Italian convention dedicated to comics, video games and fantasy, where the Vatican Diocese is organizing an event dedicated to “Luca and Friends.”
This will be the first time the country will participate in such an event. Fisichella said he hopes this “will allow us to speak to younger generations about the theme of hope, which is more central than ever in the gospel message.”
Very soon anime culture will conquer the whole world. For example, it even conquered our stomachs because anime ramen became one of the most popular dishes of this year.
