Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight has become iconic. But Christopher Nolan was always unsure of his choice.
One of the main candidates for the role in the film 16 years ago was Joaquin Phoenix. Ultimately, the role went to Ledger. “I remember talking to Chris Nolan about The Dark Knight, but for some reason I wasn’t cast. Actually, I wasn’t ready then. I can’t imagine what would have happened if Heath Ledger wasn’t in this movie,” Phoenix said in a recent interview on the Rick Rubin podcast Tetragrammaton.
His role as the antagonist in 2019’s Joker earned Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for Best Actor. Heath Ledger also received this award. Thanks to the efforts of these two actors, the comic book character reached serious dramatic heights and became one of the most admired actors.
