Mariah Carey Sues By Louisiana Country Songwriter For “You’re All I Want For Christmas”

One of the most popular Christmas carols of all time has been legally protested by a country music songwriter for alleged copyright infringement of “You’re All I Want for Christmas”.

Mariah Carey and co-author Walter Afsantif are Vince Vance in a Suit with “All I Want for Christmas” and composer Andy Stone, who has claimed he’s been raped since 1989. Stone filed the case in the Supreme Court. US territory in eastern Louisiana.

While the titles of the songs are the same, there’s only a hint of Kerry melody or lyrics beyond the title call.

A version of Kerry’s song was released in 1994 and became the annual Christmas Day radio, broadcast, and NBA playlist.

Stone claims his song had widespread repercussions during the 1993 Christmas season and is seeking $20 million in compensation. Stone said Kerry and Afsaneff “intentionally ran a campaign to infringe copyright on the work.”

Country Country faces an uphill battle to prove its claims.

Los Angeles attorney Pamela Coslin, who specializes in music and intellectual property rights, noted there are 177 works, many of them musical compositions titled “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

Coslin noted that if all the poems were “essentially similar” to Kerry’s version, she would have given a different answer.

“Song names are not copyrighted,” Koslin added. “Therefore, there are 177 works used under the same name. An even more popular title is “Baby,” which has 4,860 works registered with the copyright office. “This does not apply to ‘common law’ (unregistered) works of the same name.”

Kerry’s version of the song has over a billion streams on Spotify alone. Last year, it became the first song to reach number one in three separate series on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
