Ian McKellen, 85, has rejected the title of “National Treasure”. The Lord of the Rings star believes his characters “overshadow his true self”.

Many actors dream of being recognized as a national treasure, but Ian McKellen has rejected the title, saying it applies more to his Lord of the Rings character Gandalf than to himself. The actor told the Huffington Post how his favorite roles, including Magneto from the X-Men franchise, have affected his real-life image: “If you live a public life, then you have an image that is perhaps out of your control. That’s how I perceive you.”
The actor added that when people praised him for his influence on their lives, McKellen explained that it wasn’t actually him. “It must be Gandalf, you know?” – Ian added humorously.
Meanwhile, the artist has repeatedly stated that he has no plans to retire: “I will continue until my knees buckle, my memory fails or I go crazy.” “It is better to wear out than to rust,” McKellen said.
It comes after the Oscar-nominated actor said it would be at least a year before he could return to the stage after falling during a West End performance in June. The Lord of the Rings star has been recovering ever since.
Ian McKellen had previously asked him to hurry up filming for the new “Lord of the Rings” movie, in which he will again play Gandalf. Read the details here.
