Ariana Grande, who will star in the long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, will not be receiving an Oscar for Best Actress, after it was revealed that the singer and Grammy winner had ditched her in favor of Cynthia Erivo.

The actresses decided not to be like their characters: In the musical, Ariana Grande plays Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
The musical’s plot tells the story of events that precede the events of Lyman Baum’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. It is a story about growing up and the rivalry between two dissimilar magical students: a green-skinned outcast girl and her beautiful rival for her lover’s heart. Also, the future film, like the musical performance, touches on the theme of the Wizard’s cruelty, which turns the inhabitants of Oz against Elphaba.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who will perform a duet, will not compete with each other for the main prize of the prestigious Tony Award, as Idina Menzel (who, by the way, gave voice to Elsa from Frozen) and Kristin Chenoweth (awarded for her services to musical theater). In 2004, both actresses won in the category “Best Actress in a Musical”. In the end, Idina Menzel became the winner.
This time, the actors decided to change their strategy so that none of them would remain without an Oscar. It was decided that Cynthia Erivo would compete for the female lead and Ariana Grande would compete for the best supporting actress.
So the actresses decided to win more awards at the Oscars and avoid the fate of films with two equally strong main characters, for example, All About Eve or Thelma and Louise.
The musical “Wicked” will premiere on November 22, 2024.
