Scientists: People trust bearded men less

A study conducted by a team of scientists from McMaster University found that a man’s beard can have a significant impact on how others perceive him. So, it is believed that representatives of the stronger sex with a smooth face are three times more likely to be bearded than men, writes The Guardian.

It turned out that clean-shaven men were more trustworthy. And only 13 participants “voted” for those with beards. In addition, bearded people were considered less attractive than the other gender. Men with less facial hair were rated more attractive by women in both short-term and long-term relationships.

Researchers noted that thick beards are seen as a sign of aggression and dominance. By the way, previous studies on this topic also confirmed this. Therefore, the growth of facial hair is dependent on testosterone levels and is associated with aggression. Aggressive appearance was found to be negatively correlated with trustworthiness.

Therefore, men who want to appear more credible, especially in leadership positions, may want to maintain a clean-shaven appearance.

We’ve previously mentioned a study that found some women find bearded men attractive. Read about it here.
