Canadian scientists claim that previous research has overstated the health benefits of alcohol. They examined 107 scientific papers on people’s habits and compared their attitudes towards alcohol with their life expectancy.

“The health benefits of alcohol have been overestimated and the harms underestimated in most previous studies,” said study author Tim Stockwell. “It has become a propaganda ploy for the alcohol industry to claim that moderate consumption of its products will increase people’s lifespans,” he said.

His colleague Dame Sally Davies agreed with the doctor, saying there was no safe level of alcohol consumption. And a major 2018 study confirmed this point. It found that alcohol caused 2.8 million deaths in 2016 and was the leading risk factor for premature death and disability in people aged 15 to 49. Among people over 50, around 27 per cent of global cancer deaths in women and 19 per cent in men were linked to drinking.

By the way, as a rule, such studies are conducted on people who drink alcohol. They smoke more often, buy cheaper food and generally live worse.
