The complete skeleton of a 161 million-year-old stegosaurus nicknamed Apex was sold at a Sotheby’s auction, making it the most valuable fossil ever sold.

Thus, the party was worth 44.6 million dollars (3.9 million rubles – Note.), reported on the auction house page on the X* social network. Previously, the most expensive remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex, nicknamed Stan, were sold at auction for $ 31.8 million in 2020. The auction house initially estimated the value of the lot at $ 4-6 million. The final price exceeded the preliminary estimate by more than 11 times.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the lucky owner of the stegosaurus skeleton was Kenneth Griffin, 55. The buyer promised to loan it to a museum, declaring that “Apex was born in America” and that’s where it would stay.
The remains of a stegosaurus were found in Colorado in 2022. The crown reaches 3.4 m in height and 8.2 m in length.
