It’s absolutely impossible to imagine anyone other than Robert Downey Jr. playing the role of Iron Man. But the actor actually auditioned for a completely different role.

Downey Jr. looked for a role in the Fantastic Four movie in 2005. He wanted to play Doctor Doom in it. Director Jon Favreau told Deadline, “I think he has a shot in Fantastic Four.” But in the end, Charmed star Julian McMahon became Doctor Doom.

This moment was a turning point not only for Robert Downey Jr., but also in his destiny. According to Jon Favreau, without him, Iron Man might not have appeared on the big screen. The director noted that Downey became the core of the film and the other actors began to gather around him.
