Even though we sometimes wish we weren’t stuck in time, we have to admit that we can’t help it. For children, the concept of time is complex, and even more so when they cannot read and understand the numbers on a clock.
In today’s digital age, it is still very important that they learn to tell the time. But then, how do we do it? And at what age can you start?
Knowing how to tell time: a story of timing
In France, children generally start learn to tell the time in CE1. This learning continues in CE2, then in CM1. But you can start introducing your child yourself earlier, after the age of 5 or 6, depending on his curiosity.
Before starting an initiation, several factors must be taken into account: that the child knows how to count at least up to 60, that he knows how to differentiate the different moments of the day (morning, afternoon, evening) and that he wants to learn. Each child goes at their own pace, without pressure.
Start gently
You can already start draw a big clock on a piece of paper and simply explain to him the difference between the small and large needle. Show him which parts correspond to certain moments of the day and how they help him locate himself in time. You can add small designs for certain periods of time, such as a plate and silverware at meal times, an alarm clock for wake-up time, a bathtub for shower time.
Also, in order for the child to become familiar with the concept of time, you can ask him to time himself, and follow the movement of the large hand and the second hand, while carrying out a daily activity: 3 minutes to brush your teeth, 10 minutes to cook the pasta, 30 minutes to bake the cake in the oven... Watch the seconds and minutes passing will help him anchor himself to the reality of time passing.
Tools to help
If you find yourself having difficulty explaining the concept of time and how a clock works, there are also tools that can help you, until your child learns in a more concrete way at school.
There are many coloring pages and applications available on the Internet to help you understand how time works.
On the gaming side, the Clementoni brand has launched a new tool from its Education line entitled "The time, a clock and 13 illustrated minipuzzles to learn to tell the time". Very well done, it helps to introduce the little ones can decipher the time with games and puzzles, in a fun and educational way.
But otherwise, don't panic! Your child will quickly learn to tell the time when he is ready.
