LGBTphobic acts exploded in 2023

According to a Home Office study, 4,560 crimes against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans people were recorded in 2023.

A sad increase. Attacks against LGBTQI+ people have increased 13% in 2023 in France compared to 2022, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior published on Thursday 16 May, on the eve of the World Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

A 19% increase for crimes and misdemeanors

Worse still, the crimes and offenses ascertained by the police and the gendarmerie, i.e. acts of defamation, attacks, threats or even harassment, experience a 19% jump. Fines, which had decreased by 9% between 2022 and 2023, increased by 4% this time.

In total, 4,560 crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people were registered in 2023. Among these, 2,870 crimes or misdemeanors and 1,690 fines, of which 94% related to insults according to the lawFrench media agency.

Underestimated figures

The vast majority of victims of crimes and misdemeanors are men. (72% in 2023) and those under 20 years old (49%). The suspects are also mostly men and young people. (31% are under 20 years old).

If the study reports a “liberation of speech” it’s a “Improvement of reception conditions » victims of the police and gendarmerie, he specifies only 20% of LGBT+ victims file a complaint in case of threats or violence and only 5% in case of insult. It is therefore not possible to know how many crimes actually occurred in 2023, which is therefore an official figure underrated.
