The Schiaparelli house does nothing like everyone else. Founded by Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) in 1927, it fell under the fashion radar at the end of World War II, before returning to prominence under the artistic direction of Daniel Roseberry in 2019.
Since then, the Texan designer has exacerbated his surrealist codes. In particular, he transforms anatomical parts (such as eyes, mouth or ears) into gold jewels to decorate clothes and accessories in unexpected places. Just as we were starting to get used to his ankle boots and trompe-l’oeil gold-toe pumps, he’s now turned the idea into sneakers, Schiaparelli’s first, releasing on April 19, 2024.

Because almost everyone loves to hate these Schiaparelli sneakers
On its e-shop the house presents them like this:
“For the very first Schiaparelli sneaker, Daniel Roseberry imagined a lightweight and practical ecru canvas sneaker, revisited with our signature trompe-l’oeil golden tips, an irregular tape measure-shaped design that delicately adorns the edges of the sole and , in the lower part, a trompe l’oeil impression by Schiaparelli. »
In reality, we had already seen these first Schiaparelli sneakers on the catwalk of the maison’s spring-summer 2024 collection, presented in September 2023. When they are produced and arrive in stores, here we are on April 19, 2024.
In the meantime, no one seems to have gotten used to the idea, given the reactions to Schiaparelli’s trompe-l’oeil sneaker. Many people love them, but others love to hate them, as the following tweets illustrate:
I think everyone is criticizing how ridiculous it would be to model them, but they are so fucking awesome I can’t hate them. https://t.co/zk7p89X7y2

How much does the Schiaparelli Trompe-l’oeil Basket cost?
Available in sizes from 35 to 42, the “Basket Trompe-l’oeil” by Schiaparelli costs a whopping 2,300 euros. Yes, Converse-style cotton canvas sneakers are expensive, with brass toe caps and tape measure rubber soles. But perhaps the price is also meant to be surreal…In fact, the house is doing quite poorly financially.
Which luxury group does the Schiaparelli house, in financial difficulty, belong to?
Despite media coverage, the Schiaparelli house is still struggling with profitability, as an investigation by investigative media shows Glitz in March 2024: “ Controlled by the Della Valle familySchiaparelli remains burdened by a heavy deficit, which ready-to-wear is unable to fill. »
Indeed, the company would struggle to convert its strong brand image into financial success: “ the latest results published by Elsa Schiaparelli SAS reports a negative net result of -9 million euros for a turnover of 6 million euros » financial results continue for the 2023 financial year, which were already worrying well before the Covid-19 pandemic Glitz : “ In 2019, the brand recorded a negative result of -13.5 million euros, after -7.89 million euros in 2018. » A fragile situation that attracts the desires of other competing luxury groups, such as Kering, and above all LVMH.
To see if these new sneakers could serve as golden eggs for Schiaparelli as well as the controversial reinterpretation of the famous Stan Smith by Alexander McQueen in a wedge version.
