Children’s gender transition: the LR bill singled out for its “dangerous recommendations”

On Monday 15 April 2024, more than 400 signatories published an article in Libération to denounce the LR bill aimed at banning gender transitions for minors. According to the signatories, this law would condemn trans children “to years of unhappiness “.

LR senators have presented a bill aimed at banning any of them “hormonal or surgical transition before the age of 18”. Brandishing the pseudo-child protection card, they particularly recommend banning puberty blockers. In a forum published on the website of Publication On Monday 15 April, more than 400 signatories, including the Grandir Trans collective, Virginie Despentes and Paul B. Preciado, protested against this law “criminal and discriminatory” which would be equivalent to condemning transgender children “to years of unhappiness “.

“We are concerned to see the extent to which our children’s experiences are denied”

The signatories deplore shaky arguments, based on a truncated vision of reality and founded on a retrograde ideology opposed to change. “We are concerned to see the extent to which our children’s experiences are denied in this report in favor of a concern to see our society evolve and empower young people to take responsibility for their gender issues.”

They repel them further “proposals that ignore the experiences of our families and manipulate scientific research” go against “the values of the Republic” (which however condemn transphobia) by introducing discrimination against trans children.

The signatories instead propose a series of counter-recommendations, in the fields of education, health or even public policies, to truly listen and support “at their own pace and whatever their journey” trans children and guarantee“let them live happily and peacefully according to their gender self-determination”.

A bill that reduces transience to mental illness

“By imposing “first intention” psychiatric care on transgender minors suffering from disorders, transidentity is brought back into the realm of mental illness” There are many signatories who warn of the tendency of the text to circumvent the ban on conversion therapy.

The law also conveys incorrect stereotypes, such as the idea that minors’ medical transition is poorly regulated and that gender reassignment surgeries are common among children under 18. Regarding puberty blockers, the column reminds us that they play an essential role in the mental health of trans minors: “they allow our children to live their adolescence more peacefully and significantly reduce suicide attempts”.

On the pseudo-regrets the signatories are unanimous: “detransitions exist, but they are rare and largely linked to social and family pressures”.
