Not involving children in household chores is not the best thing. If some think that excluding them from these activities allows them to be spared from household chores because they are just children, this is not necessarily true. In fact, helping around the house, having real tasks to do, helps them realize their importance within the family. Furthermore, it helps them become independent and contributes to their healthy development. But what tasks can they perform?
Household chores an 8 year old can do
If we base ourselves on the average age of childhood, i.e. 8 or 9 years (or even a little earlier, if the child is enterprising), some tasks can be done independently.
1 – Take care of your laundry
This means that he can very well learn to separate clean from dirty laundry, to put dirty laundry in the basket, to separate colors from white and even to fold and put away his own clothes once they are clean. He can also learn to operate a machine, but under supervision, especially with the use of detergents that can be toxic.
2 – Put dirty dishes in the dishwasher or wash them by hand
An 8-year-old is perfectly capable of putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher or using a sponge to clean loose items in the sink. You just have to show him how to do it.
3 – Participate in setting up the table
Setting the table and clearing the table is learned from an early age. Sure, we teach him to be careful when carrying knives or jugs of water, but at 8 years old it’s largely doable.
4 – Sweep and dust
A soft cloth to clean the dust from the furniture and you’re done. Same thing for the use of the broom and the brush: at 8 years old they are picking their nose.
5 – Make your bed every morning
It’s a habit you can form from an early age: making your bed. Not necessarily in a military way, but putting back the duvet and pillow before going to school is within the reach of all 8-year-olds (or almost).
6 – Put away the groceries
An 8-year-old who knows his home well is able to help put groceries in the refrigerator and/or cupboards.
7 – Clean fruit and vegetables
If you think he or she is too young to cook (even if there are suitable tools to prevent cutting little fingers), an 8-year-old child can perfectly participate in the preparation of the meal by washing the fruit and/or vegetables in clean water.
8 – Take care of your pet
Has he pressured you into adopting a cat or dog? Well, he can also take care of it himself, feeding him, changing his water bowl or removing excrement from the litter box. She makes him responsible and will allow him to create a strong bond with his animal.
Since gnomes don’t pay rent, they can at least do it, right?
