This Side Effect of Pollen Allergies You May Suffer From (And How to Fix It)

While spring is often synonymous with congested sinuses for severe allergy sufferers, here’s a side effect unsuspecting.

Whoever says spring means pollen everywhere and for some, allergies galore. Runny nose, red eyes, sore throat… In France, the Ministry of Health and Prevention estimates that 30% of the population is affected by pollen allergies.

Lack of sleep, a side effect of pollen allergies

These allergies are often accompanied by difficulty getting restful sleep. This is what a British study demonstrates, the results of which reported by the Allergy UK association speak clearly: up to 57% of adult patients and up to 88% of children affected by hay fever have sleep problems, including micro-arousals, which lead to daytime fatigue and drowsiness, as well as decreased cognitive function (Pawankar R, et al, 2013). A lack of sleep accompanied by increased tiredness and irritability during the day, as well as a reduction in daily productivity.

To combat this phenomenon and optimize your chances of sleeping well, there are several tips, listed by the English newspaper Meter.

Take a hot shower before going to bed

Steam helps decongest the nose by relieving inflammation in the nasal passages. It’s also a good way to relax before going to sleep.

Sleeping with a sock full of rice on your forehead

This grandmother’s advice may seem far-fetched, but it’s not, according to British media which encourages placing a warm (read: microwaved for 30 seconds) sock previously filled with (uncooked) rice on your forehead to relieve pressure on your sinuses .

Drink some herbal tea

Some plants such as nettle leaves have natural antihistamine properties. Chamomile and lavender are also ideal for relaxing before bed.

Sleep in hypoallergenic sheets

When no other solution works, investing in hypoallergenic bedding, which is supposed to keep pollen and dust mites away from your sleeping area, remains a significant option for improving your sleep quality.
