This is a good example of a film that was crowned at the time (it won the Oscar for best picture), but which caused a profound discomfort when we see him again today.
In American beauty, a fairy tale about an American family published in 1999, the father is played by Kevin Spacey. The latter is having recurring fantasies about his daughter’s best friend from high school, a young cheerleader. The film shows several sex scenes, coming from the father’s imagination. We see the young woman naked or having sex with Kevin Spacey several times.
In an interview for Variety published on April 3, Kirsten Dunst revealed that she was I approached to play this cheerleader in Sam Mendes’ film. Although this approach did not lead to an explicit role offer, the actress revealed:
“I don’t know if I necessarily refused (…) But yes, I just didn’t feel comfortable with sexuality. »
At the time ofAmerican beauty, Kevin Spacey has not yet been accused of sexual assault. The charges related to acts allegedly committed between 2001 and 2013, two years after the film’s release date.

When these allegations of rape and sexual assault surfaced in 2017, marking one of the first acts of #MeToo, with the actress playing the role of the sexualized cheerleader in American beauty she expressed herself. In a 2021 interview for PeopleMena Suvari explained that when she heard about the accusations against Spacey, she immediately thought about her experience on the set ofAmerican beauty.
The 42-year-old actress said this “he had faith” to the actor during filming. However, she said one particular moment on set left her with a strange feeling. To prepare for a scene, Kevin Spacey took her to a back room where they were staying “they were lying on the bed very close to each other” :
“He held me gently in his arms. He was very quiet but strange and unusual. »
In July 2023, the London courts ruled that Kevin Spacey was not guilty. But at the moment he he still faces other charges in other courts. The latter will still be the protagonist of the thriller Peter Eight Five, still without a release date in France.
