In recent years, there has been an increasing number of testimonies of people, especially women, filmed without their knowledge in accommodation rented through Airbnb. So much so that the multinational in the para-hotel sector announced on 11 March 2024 that it will ban surveillance cameras, until then authorized in some rooms, starting from 30 April 2024.
“Historically, Airbnb allowed the use of indoor cameras”
Airbnb’s website states:
“Historically, Airbnb allowed the use of indoor security cameras in common areas of listings, such as hallways and living rooms, as long as they were noted on the listing page before booking and were clearly visible, and were not located in spaces such as sleeping areas and bathrooms.Updating this policy simplifies and clarifies our approach no security cameras are permitted inside the accommodations, regardless of their location, purpose or previous reporting. »
We can both rejoice at this provision and remember at the same time that the most worrying thing remains the spy cameras deliberately hidden by guests in critical environments such as bedrooms and bathrooms. Which was never authorized by the parahotel platform. But perhaps this new measure will have a deterrent effect against hidden cameras in your homes.
Outdoor cameras and decibel sensors remain authorized by Airbnb
Airbnb also reminds you that external cameras connected to intercoms remain authorized. As well as internal decibel sensors (used, for example, to detect a possible unauthorized person). Before adding:
“Hosts will be required to disclose the presence and general location of any external cameras before guests book. These cameras will also be prohibited from monitoring the interior spaces of a home and will not be allowed in certain outdoor spaces where there is a greater expectation of privacy, such as an enclosed outdoor shower or sauna. Guests are also required to report the presence of decibel noise detectors, which only evaluate decibel levels and do not record or transmit sounds or conversations and are only permitted in common areas of the accommodations. »
We therefore hope that this official tightening of the rules on the use of cameras in Airbnb accommodations (effective from 30 April) will actually be accompanied by better support for reporting spy/hidden cameras.
