It is no longer necessary to demonstrate that women are even more likely than men to make themselves available to their family. According to a study by the Department of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees), published on Tuesday 5 March, the balance between family and work life still depends heavily on mothers.
According to the survey “Childcare and reception model 2021”, in 42% of couples with young children, mothers are further away from work than fatherscompared to 8% for the latter.
Mothers more often work part-time to care for their children
Not surprisingly, the survey shows that in families with young children under the age of six, women disrupt their professional schedule the most they are the employees or workers.
Mothers “They are much more often unemployed or part-time » that the fathers “For reasons related to children » notes Drees. “This situation is sometimes forced, especially among employed or working mothers, for economic reasons or for their working conditions », underlines the report. As such, the study identifies six times more mothers than fathers who do not work full time for reasons related to childcare.

Furthermore, among couples with young children, mothers are twice as often unemployed as fathers (28% vs. 13%). However, unemployed mothers are much more involved in the family sphere than unemployed fathers.
And for good reason, children spend much more time during the week alone with their unemployed parent when it’s their mother (twenty-five hours a week) than their father (which amounts to nine hours). “When parents are unable to find a custody solution, It is above all mothers who are responsible for unchosen parental care » specifies Drees.
