This Wednesday 21st, a documentary is released in theaters that has received a lot of attention from the public, the press and festivals, from Venice to the Oscars. The documentary chronicles the life of Palestinian actress and director Hiam Abbass, who left her home village to pursue her dream of acting in Europe, leaving behind her mother, grandmother and seven sisters. Thirty years later, her daughter Lina Soualem, now a director, decided to return with her on the trail of the past, exploring the disappeared places and scattered memories of four generations of Palestinian women.

The documentary intertwines contemporary images with family and historical archives, creating a visual connection between present and past. The film thus becomes a profound exploration of the transmission of memory, places, femininity and resistance in the lives of these women who had to leave everything to start again.

Who is director Lina Soualem?

Born to an Algerian father and a Palestinian mother, Lina Soualem is a director and actress who has acted notably Inheritance by Hiam Abbass (2011), At my age I still hide to smoke of Rayhana (2016) or in the beautiful You deserve love by Hafsia Herzi (2019). She also participated in the writing of the series Oussekine.


His first film, Their Algeria, released in 2019, is a jewel of documentary cinema. Lina Soualem films her grandparents who, after 62 years of marriage, decide to separate. Between a silent grandfather and a grandmother full of mischief, joy and humor, offers Lina Soualem a lively and moving film about uprooting and exile of a couple who came to rebuild post-war France but were still considered “foreign”.

A filmography celebrated at festivals

Their Algeria he received around ten awards including the first feature award at the CINEMED Festival and the award for best documentary at the CINEMANIA Festival. In turn, Bye bye Tiberiasis selected in 2023 world premiere at the Venice International Film Festivalat the festival Toronto Internationalit’s at BFI London Film Festival and was also nominated to represent Palestine at the 2024 Oscars.
