In Greece, same-sex couples will (finally) be able to marry and adopt

Backed by right-wing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the law has yet to be enacted. Greece will thus become the 37th country in the world to legalize same-sex adoptions.

“A turning point for human rights, like Greece today: a progressive and democratic country, passionately attached to European values. » This is how Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek Prime Minister, described in X the adoption, on Thursday 15 February, of a law approving same-sex marriage and same-sex adoption.

A text supported by conservatives

Although affiliated with the conservative New Democracy party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis supported this social reform, which he allowed to be widely adopted in Parliament (176 votes against 254) after two days of debate, despite staunch opposition from the Orthodox Church.


“From tomorrow one more barrier will be removed between us (citizens) and it will become a bridge of coexistence in a free state between free citizens”said Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a speech before deputies, shortly before the adoption of the law.

For the latter to be implemented, it still needs to be promulgated. When this is done, Greece will become the 37 countriesAnd country in the world to legalize same-sex adoptions and the 17thAnd within the European Union.
