If sleep procrastination syndrome or even “revenge bedtime procrastination” in English has really started to make headlines in recent years, it was in 2014 that scientists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands began to take an interest in it.
Their study appears today in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. The idea behind this investigation? Understand why we constantly put off sleep, even when our eyes are so heavy that they close on their own.
How do you know if you suffer from sleep procrastination syndrome?
According to scientists, it is very simple to evaluate whether a person suffers from this “syndrome” based on three main criteria:
- If the person deliberately delays going to bed.
- If she doesn’t have a good reason to stay up late.
- If he is aware that delaying bedtime will reduce his sleep time, but continues anyway and therefore accumulates tiredness.
But a question arises spontaneously: Why delay sleep when you can just go to bed and enjoy a good night’s rest?

A generational problem linked to frustration
After spending the whole day at work, Going to bed early can seem frustrating to some. And it is precisely for this reason that these people decide to postpone their bedtime in order to enjoy the evening more. In any case, this is what Carla Valette, a medical student, analyzed with 2.7 million subscribers on TikTok:
“After a long day at work, you have very little free time left and it can be extremely frustrating. So what you do is stay up as late as possible doing something you love, all to get back to your workday that took up all your time.”
She continues:
“ Going to sleep means the day is truly over and sometimes we don’t go to bed to put it off until tomorrow.”
Because yes, the stress of the next day, certain work events or even the anxiety of exams can make us want to postpone the fateful bedtime hour.
Who are most at risk of falling into this trap? Women and students… Two categories of population that tend to suffer more from a stressful and hectic pace of life… Something to think about…
