The fraudster, who introduced himself as Leonardo DiCaprio, made the girl believe that he was communicating with a Hollywood actor. The incident was reported by the press service of the Cheboksary Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The case began in January last year, when the attacker began expressing sympathy on behalf of Leonardo DiCaprio by writing a letter to a 32-year-old girl who worked as a consultant. After five months of communication, a new “becoming a superfan” option opened up for her; this included the ability to talk to the player via video call and cost 80 thousand rubles.
The girl, who was attracted by the fake DiCaprio, took out a loan and transferred the money to the fraudster. They even had a conversation, but it only lasted a second and she didn’t have time to understand anything. They then continued to communicate online but still had to contact the police. The attacker’s victim realized that she had been deceived after the Hollywood actor asked her for help in paying for her ticket to Cheboksary. The Ministry of Internal Affairs had previously reported that a criminal case had been opened under the fraud article.
We previously wrote about a man proposing to a girl whom ChatGPT contacted on his behalf.
