IVG in the Constitution: Deputies largely adopt the law

This is a first step towards the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution. On Tuesday 30 January, deputies voted overwhelmingly in favor of the text “determines the conditions under which guaranteed freedom so that the woman can have recourse » to abortion.

The vast majority of left-wing elected officials, almost all the Renaissance deputies and the independent Liot group, voted in favor. In total there were 493 votes in favour, 30 against and 23 abstentions.

The text will still have to be examined by the Senate before being submitted to Congress

We now need to examine the text February 28th by the Senate, dominated by the right and the center, where the formulation of “guaranteed freedom” obtains much less consensus among senators. Like Gérard Larcher, who did not hesitate to express his personal opposition to this bill.

For him, we should respect the “principle of the Velo law, in particular on the terms for abortion: first of all, the rights of the woman are preserved, then, after a certain period, the rights of the child and the right of the unborn child. However, for this law to be adopted, balance is essential. From the National Assembly and the Senate must vote on the same text, down to the commabefore submitting it to the vote of Congress which brings together all parliamentarians, deputies and senators.
