2023 marks a turning point in the world of books in France, with a significant upheaval in the ranking of best-selling authors.
Writers over a million
Finished the undisputed reign of Guillaume Mussowhich dominated sales for 12 consecutive years. The annual ranking of ten best-selling writers in Franceestablished by the GfK institute and presented by Le Figaro of January 17, reveals the rise of women to the top of the ranking of best-selling literary titles.
It is Mélissa Da Costa who now sits at the top of the French literary pyramid. At just 33 years old, in the last year she managed to sell 1.275 million copies. About her Her novel Phantom painreleased in paperback in February, it rose to ninth place among the best-selling books, while All the blue of the sky occupies eleventh position. A feat that marks the end of the record of Guillaume Musso, who has not published any titles in 2023.

Virginie Grimaldi in second position
In second place is another writer, Virginie Grimaldi, who has sold more than one million copies (1,063 million) in 2023. Her flagship work, We will be left with this, won the hearts of readers. Third place is occupied by Pierre Lemaitre with 853,000 copies sold, followed by Maud Ankaoua (801,000) and Franck Thilliez (681,000).
The breakthrough of female writers in the best-selling books list in 2023 highlights the diversity and richness of their voices in the contemporary literary landscape. Readers seem increasingly drawn to the stories and perspectives offered by these female voices.
