RuPaul’s Drag Race continues its crazy run. At the Emmy Awards ceremony on Monday night, the show received the award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program. But beyond the triumph, its presenter, the American drag queen RuPaul, made an impression with a speech celebrating its importance public libraries as a place to share queer knowledge and experiences with young audiences.
“Knowledge is power”
During his win, RuPaul shared the stage with fellow judges Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews, accepting the award on behalf of the entire team Endurance race. But, instead of simply celebrating the show’s success, RuPaul has taken this platform to advocate for queer events aimed at children in libraries, schools or bookstores like Drag Story Hour, which aim to promote diversity, creativity and education.
“We are truly honored to receive this award”thanked RuPaul, adding:
“On behalf of everyone we thank you. If a drag queen wants to read you a story in a library, listen to it because it is knowledge, it’s power and if someone is trying to limit your access to power, they are trying to scare you, then listen to a drag queen. »
RuPaul highlighted the importance of Drag Story Hour, citing its ability to capture children’s imaginations as it delivers identity models free from oppressive gender norms. If RuPaul’s speech is so beneficial, it is mainly because these events take place regularly subject of homophobic attacks perpetrated by small groups or far-right politicians, as reported CNN.
