EXCLUSIVE: New success with the critically acclaimed docs Slew And Willie Nelson and family, chronicling the life and careers of Sylvester Stallone and the legendary country artist of the same name, respectively, has signed Thom Zimny to Artists First. The production and management company will look for opportunities to help the filmmaker showcase his talents in the world of narrative feature films.
Zimny, an Emmy and Grammy Award-winning director, producer and editor, served as co-director Willie Nelson and family with Oren Moverman. The project was the first authorized documentary film about Nelson’s life and career and premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before debuting on Paramount+.
For decades, he’s scouted Stallone through Hollywood wearing the Zimny helmet Slew debuted on the streamer after the conclusion of TIFF last fall. The next step for the multi-hyphen is The Beach Boysa documentary about the popular surf rockers directed by Frank Marshall with Disney+, due out later this year.
Zimny, who has worked regularly with Bruce Springsteen for 25 years, won an Emmy for his direction Springsteen on Broadway. He also ran Apple TV+ letter to youin which Springsteen and the E Street Band document the recording of their eponymous album and co-directs the music documentary with Springsteen Western stars, which premiered at TIFF and was an official selection of London’s BFI. Zimny’s other Springsteen-centric projects include his Grammy-winning album Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run and HBO titles The Promise: The Emergence of Darkness on the Edge of the City, Bruce Springsteen’s High ExpectationsAnd The ties that connect.
In addition to music videos for Bob Dylan, The Low Anthem and others, Himney also contributed The Gift: Johnny Cash’s Journey and HBO twofold Elvis: The Seeker, among other projects. He previously edited three seasons of the classic HBO series The cablewho serves as consulting producer Dropped off (VH1) and Deep web (Epix) and as music consultant for HBO miniseries show me a hero.
Zimny will continue to be represented by CAA.
