Jeff Zucker-led RedBird IMI Acquires Stake in “The Morning Show” Studio Media Res

RedBird IMI, a joint venture investment firm led by Jeff Zucker, has a stake in The Morning Show Production Unit Media Res.

Founded by CEO Michael Ellenberg, a former HBO executive, Media Res also produces another notable Apple TV+ title: Pachinko.

An announcement about the investment said it would “drive Media Res’ growth as a leading independent studio” and allow the company to expand into scripted series as well as grow its business in film and non-fiction.

The investment is RedBird IMI’s first investment in a scripted production team. Zucker, who ended a long tenure at CNN in 2023, came aboard RedBird IMI, which is owned by private equity firm RedBird Capital and Abu Dhabi-based International Media Investments, later this year.

Other investments in the company’s first year include EverWonder Studios, Hidden Pigeon Company and Front Office Sports.

The Morning Show, which launched alongside Apple TV+ in 2019, became the streaming service’s most-watched drama in its third season. Ellenberg was previously head of drama at HBO and oversaw shows such as Big Little Lies, Real detective, The rest And Westworld.

“It has been exciting to see how Michael has been able to bring together the most creative minds in the industry and develop innovative, commercially successful series for the new television landscape,” said Zucker. “Media Res was a natural partnership for us as we continue to expand our presence in all forms of written, scripted and children’s entertainment, as well as news and information.”

Ellenberg said Media Res was “launched with the belief that an independent studio model can be successful in today’s consolidated market – creating a home for ground-breaking artists and material with the goal of surprising and inspiring audiences worldwide RedBird ‘s involvement, he continued, “will allow us to build on what we started and accelerate Media Res’ growth as a major provider of premium storytelling.”
