A man who raped a 20-year-old British waitress after driving her to a remote location near Ayia Napa and giving her nitrous oxide has lost his appeal against his eight-year prison sentence in Cyprus.
The offender failed to convince in an appeal hearing that he was wrongly convicted by the Larnaca Criminal Court. The judges rejected his claim that he had consensual sex with the woman, local media reported.
The victim’s statement was accepted by the Court of Appeal, while the 36-year-old man – identified only as IK – was apparently considered unreliable.
The waitress, who had started working at the popular holiday destination just a month before, knew the rapist as someone who also worked in the local tourism industry when the brutal attack took place in 2019.
She got into his car on June 26 to use nitrous oxide and said she “trusted him and felt safe without ever having any intention, desire or expectation to have sex with him.” communicated to the court.

The man found some marijuana under the driver’s seat and drove the woman to an unknown location.
She became more and more scared when she realized they were some distance from her apartment, and she texted her friend to let her know where she was.
They eventually stopped in a remote area in Sotira, with the woman saying she was “very scared because it was dark and remote.”
After they drank nitrous oxide and smoked weed together, she asked to be taken back to her apartment.
When she tried to leave, “the rapist grabbed her and threw her while she was crying,” the woman said.
She told the court that she was very scared and did not know what would happen to her if she fought back.
After the illness, she was taken back to her apartment, where her roommate found her “very upset, crying and confused and she didn’t say anything for a long time.”
He was sentenced to eight years in prison, but appealed against the sentence.
The attacker claimed he did not receive a fair trial in court due to problems with his interpreter, the Cyprus Times reports.
The appeals court said the problem had already been identified in the first trial and the interpreter had been replaced.
It deemed him an unreliable witness and said his testimony “contained many contradictions, ambiguities, evasions and lies.”
The judges found that the woman “at no time” gave the perpetrator any indication that he wanted to pursue her.
