In a press release noted by France Basque Country Bluethe SOS Homophobia association accuses the bishop of Bayonne-Lescar-Oloron, Marc Aillet, of “legitimize » the implementation of conversion therapies. The latter published a note on the website of his diocese on 29 December regarding the blessing of homosexual couples, recently authorized by the Vatican outside the liturgy. Its ambiguous content provoked a reaction from the association.
Discriminating conditions
Addressing the priests of the diocese, the bishop writes: «I invite them, if anyone asks, to give them a blessing, as long as it is to each one individually, calling them to conversion and inviting them to ask for the help of the grace that the Lord grants to all those who ask him to conform their lives to the Will of God . »
As detailed franceinfo, the SOS Homophobia association perceives this message as a call to legitimize conversion therapies, which aim to change a person’s sexual orientation. This dangerous practice is banned in France. The association “believes that the prelate requires conditions deemed discriminatory for homosexual couples who wish to receive this blessing”. A reading “wrong” according to the bishopric of Bayonne, questioned by franceinfowhich defends the reference to the Gospel, inviting ” all believers to change direction to take the right path “.
