EXCLUSIVE: Bad Wolf’s unusual deal to make a BBC Studios show Doctor who Helped Sony’s production company achieve record revenues.

Bad Wolf received the production contract Doctor who in September 2021 as part of a deal to return Russell T Davies to the role of showrunner.

In its first year as an iconic sci-fi series, Bad Wolf recorded revenues of £117 million ($148 million) in the 12 months to the end of March 2023, up 192% from £40.2 million in 2022.

Bad Wolf subsidiary Whoniverse1, the special vehicle that Doctor who made additional sales of 43 million pounds ($54 million) in the year to March.

The total turnover of £117m was Bad Wolf’s highest turnover in a 12-month period since the company was founded in 2015 by Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter.

Bad Wolf recorded sales of £121m in 2020, but only for a 15-month period after the company extended its accounting cycle.

According to results published on Companies House, the Wales-based manufacturing company’s pre-tax profit was up 366% to £7m in 2023, up from £1.5m the previous year.

Doctor who has always been produced by the BBC or BBC Studios and there is no precedent for the corporation handing over the keys to such an iconic brand to an outside producer.

BBC Studios still owns the Doctor who Brand and oversee international sales and merchandising. The company brokered the deal with Disney+ for streaming rights outside the UK.

Gardner and Tranter, both former BBC producers, worked with Davies on the 2005 film Doctor who Start over. Its first episode, a special starring David Tennant, was watched by 7.6 million people on the BBC last month.
