Josh Kramer, who produced Roman Polanskis Death and the girl and that of Sidney Lumet Night falls over Manhattan and later led distribution for Capitol Films before becoming head of motion picture business operations at Amazon Studios, has died. He was 67.
Kramer died on November 27 in Santa Monica.
Born on May 17, 1956, he began his showbiz career with Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis, where he pre-sold foreign film rights to finance films, among other things. Manhunter, Blue velvet and others. Kramer played a key role in the success of the 1991 concert photo Madonna: Truth or DareManagement of the acquisition of the film rights and the subsequent sale of the film abroad.
In the early 1990s, he and Thom Mount founded the Mount/Kramer Company Death and the girl (1994) and Night falls over Manhattan (1996).
He then became sales manager at Capitol Films and later moved to international acquisitions at MGM. In 2005, he started his career at Amazon as the first license manager of Amazon Unbox. There, he built the company’s relationships with major Hollywood studios and television networks to build a comprehensive program for Amazon’s new video platform. He and his team were also responsible for growing Amazon Video through deals with TiVo, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Vizio, Roku and others.
From 2014 to 2018, he led Motion Picture Business Operations at Amazon Studios and played a critical role in the studio’s early success. He wrote the original business plan for Amazon Studios’ film division and developed distribution strategies that launched the studio’s early film projects, including Chi-Raq, the big sick one and Oscar nominations for Best Picture Manchester by the sea.
After leaving Amazon Studios, Josh founded the blockchain service BKopy.io in 2021 and served as managing partner of Resonance Content.
In addition to his work, Kramer was also an accomplished classical pianist and published short stories.
Kramer is survived by his wife, Kathie; her son Jack; a brother, Ken (sister-in-law Dee Dee); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service was held on 17 December.
