Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was hospitalized Friday night in Los Angeles after breaking his hip while attending a concert, his representative confirmed.
Deborah Morales, Abdul-Jabbar’s representative, said in a statement on social media that the injury was the result of a fall.
“Last night, while attending a concert, Kareem accidentally fell and broke his hip,” she said. “He is being operated on today. We are all very grateful for the support for Kareem, especially from the Los Angeles Fire Department, who assisted Kareem at the scene, and the wonderful medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital who are now taking great care of Kareem.”
TMZ was first to report the news.
The 7-foot-2 Jabbar is a Hall of Famer who won six NBA titles, five of them as a member of the LA Lakers. Since his retirement in 1989, he has become known for his work as an activist and writer. He also had some health issues, including a battle with prostate cancer, leukemia and bypass surgery.
It was not immediately known which concert Abdul-Jabbar attended or where it was held.
Earlier this year, Abdul-Jabbar was there when the Lakers’ LeBron James surpassed his all-time NBA scoring record.

During his playing days, the UCLA graduate gained additional fame with the classic parody “Airplane!” He portrayed flight crew member Roger Murdock, who rejects a child’s impression that he doesn’t play hard enough. (In a surreal twist, Murcock is later wheeled out of the cab wearing the actor’s signature No. 33 Lakers uniform.)
