EXCLUSIVE: Joe Dempsey (game of thrones) and BAFTA winner Francesca Annis (flesh and blood) are among the many stars joining the second series of Ben Richards’ BBC legal drama Show process.
The pair join the previously announced Adeel Akhtar, Nathalie Armin and Michael Socha in the five-episode season Perform duty Producer World Productions. Dempsie will play DI Miles Southgate, while Annis will play a character called Dame Harriet Kenny.
Other high-profile cast members revealed today include Nina Toussaint-White (Bodyguard) and Fisayo Akinade (Cardiac arrest). Tom Padley (The Lost Pirate Kingdom), Kerrie Hayes (Blue pants), Ali Khan (A Ghost Tour in Venice), Daniel Kendrick (In humans), Frankie Wilson (Against the ice), Anna Prochniak (The Tattoo Artist of Auschwitz), Anna Wilson Jones (Victoria), Jan Licht (Around the world in 80 days), Aidan McArdle (spymaster), Daisy Badger (The Sandman), Flora Montgomery (The crown), Pearce Quigley (Detectorists), John Marquez (Doctor Martin), Anna Healy (mother’s day) and Barney Fishwick (Life) were also assigned roles.
“Seeing a new cast is always one of the most rewarding aspects of creating a show,” Richards said. “It is truly a privilege to have actors with such diversity and talent.”
Show processThe first season aired on BBC One in October 2021 and starred Tracy Ifeachor and Céline Buckens. What followed was a murder case that entered the national consciousness and was picked up by Sundance Now and Acorn TV for the US last year.
Featuring an all-new story and cast, the Season 2 synopsis reads: “When high-profile climate activist Marcus Calderwood is left for dead in a violent encounter, he uses his final moments to identify his killer – an off-duty police officer is.. But who is this nameless “officer”? What does his own story reveal about the nature of trauma and revenge, and was Marcus’ death a careless accident or cold-blooded murder?
Following the case from the victim’s last breath to the jury’s final verdict, the series follows stubborn officer Justin Mitchell (Socha), a tough lawyer with a reputation for losing cases, Sam Gill (Akhtar) and Leila Hassoun -Kenny (Armin). A tough CPS lawyer is leading the case against the suspect. The series rethinks public outrage and questions what happens when a trial is dominated by controversial issues.
“I’m a huge fan of everyone involved and can’t wait to work with them to bring Ben Richards’ compelling scripts to life,” said Dempsie.
“Ben is a wonderful writer and I am delighted to bring the complex character of Dame Harriet Kenny to life,” said Annis. “I was fascinated by the scripts and kept guessing until the last page.”
Julia Ford (Everything I know about love, sure) directed season 2 with Ken Horn (Service Area: Moorside The manufacturer. Executive producers are Simon Heath and Emma Luffingham for World, which is owned by ITV Studios, and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC. Show process is currently filming in and around Belfast and is being produced with the support of Northern Ireland Screen in association with ITV Studios, who will also handle international distribution.
