EXCLUSIVE: Luchina Fisher, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s upcoming short documentary The fatherssigned a representation agreement with CAA.
The latest short, directed and produced by Fisher, will debut on Netflix on November 17 and follows five fathers of trans children who meet Dennis Shepard, the father of murdered gay student Matthew Shepard, for a weekend of fishing in rural Oklahoma looking for a partner accompanied by common purpose. across races, generations and experiences. As the men throw their fishing rods into the river, they discuss what brought them together: love for their children.
Billed as a quiet meditation on fatherhood, brotherhood and masculinity, the film was produced by Dwyane Wade and Jon Marcus for 59th and Prairie Entertainment and won Best Short Documentary at the 2023 El Paso Film Festival. Netflix announced the title’s acquisition in June, runner-up for the Documentary Short Audience Award at NewFest’s 35th anniversary festival.
An award-winning writer, director and producer, Fisher’s first feature film Mama Gloria, which tells the story of Black transgender icon Gloria Allen, aired on PBS and was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award last year. Her second feature film, Left outabout the obstacles to black home ownership, was named best documentary at the American Black Film Festival.
Fisher’s other previous projects include short documentary film Team dream, which chronicles a Chicago duo’s final days of preparation for the 2022 National Senior Games as part of the eponymous training program to empower women of color. The short film, produced by Queen Latifah, was broadcast on BET and received numerous awards from the festival jury.
Fisher’s work has been supported by organizations such as Black Public Media, the Field Foundation, Sisters in Cinema, Brown Girls Doc Mafia, the Queen Collective, Women Make Movies, the Athena Film Festival’s Works in Progress program, Firelight Media and the National Endowment . for the humanities. The filmmaker was also honored earlier this year with the PitchBLACK Film Forum’s Grand Prize for an upcoming project that will focus on Black queer representation in music.
