The Republican field is shrinking as Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said tonight that he will suspend his presidential campaign.
Scott said on Fox News Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy that voters are “the most remarkable people in the world … they tell me, not now, Tim.”
Gowdy seemed surprised by Scott’s announcement, saying, “You have a lot of money.” You have the highest approval ratings of any candidate running for office, and you’re just a few states away from becoming a state where you’re loved and you’re suspending your presidential campaign?”
“I think the message for me is clear at this point,” Scott said.
Scott was one of five candidates to qualify for the Republican debate last week, but he has not made a breakthrough at any of the three events so far this cycle. Front-runner Donald Trump skipped the debates, which pundits called a “silver medal event” given the former president’s leadership.
However, Scott’s exit from the race could help solidify the vote for a Trump alternative. Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis battled for second place, while Vivek Ramaswamy and Chris Christie remained in the race.
Scott was initially seen as a potential breakout candidate who could differentiate himself from Trump by delivering a more optimistic message reminiscent of Ronald Reagan. However, this did not lead to a much more combative phase of political discourse, as Trump consolidated his lead by promising to appease his opponents if elected.
