James Austin Johnson returned as Donald Trump Saturday Night LiveThis time, the former president criticized each of his opponents as they participated in the recent Republican debate.
Tonight’s cold open skit — in which the five contestants remained in their seats as Trump took the stage — was somewhat of a riff on NBC News, where the meeting took place Wednesday night. Given Trump’s huge lead in the polls and his refusal to participate in the debates, the events were essentially a battle for the Trump alternative.
“How cute!” Johnson, as Trump said when he first took the stage. “They actually believe they have a chance. Sad in some ways, but funny in other ways.”
“Can you believe it, guys? Ninety-one charges, four trials and I’m still the best choice.”
The sketch actually started with the start of the debate – complete with graphics from NBC News – and Lester Holt (Kenan Thompson). “Welcome to the Republican children’s table debate,” Holt said.
Holt’s first question was directed at Vivek Ramaswamy (Ego Nwodim), who told him: “I don’t want to answer your question first and instead use this platform to say, ‘Your daughter is on TikTok’.”
Then Nikki Haley (Heidi Gardner) fired back: “Keep my daughter’s name out of your voice!”
In fact, it was an appropriate moment in Wednesday’s debate when Ramaswamy referred to Haley’s daughter’s use of TikTok, even though Haley herself has fiercely criticized the social media platform. What happened to that? SNL In this sketch, Haley actually told Ramaswamy, “You’re just scum.”
When Trump arrived on set, his five opponents were silent. “They’re all behind me and there’s nothing they can do about it, just like in real life,” Trump said as he turned to their poll numbers.

He continued. “We like to say: Ramaswamy. But do we like him? He makes things difficult, doesn’t he? This kid checks a lot of boxes. He is rich. He is rude. He has strange hair. He’s a lot like me, except for one thing that’s very important to my terrible, terrible foundation. … White.”
The skit then broke the fourth wall as Trump continued: “And look who SNL played him. Poor ego, you don’t like it. She doesn’t like it. She was formerly Lisa of Temecula. Now she is Vivek van Ramaswamy.”
Then it was up to Ron DeSantis (John Higgins). “Ron look [the sketch] and said, “Who the hell is that?” Even poor Ron DeSantis SNL don’t think he has a chance. If they did it would be a Paul Rudd thing or something.”
Trump then turned to Haley. “I call her bird brain, but only in public. She made some terrible points in this debate – I don’t think I know. I have trouble hearing women over 25.”
“But let’s be honest. We will not have a president named Nikki. Chairman Nikki. It just doesn’t sound right, probably because it’s a woman’s name.”
Finally, Trump reached Chris Christie. “How can we forget Chris Christie? Actually, it’s quite easy. You just walk away.”
