Lucas’ suicide: the four university students tried for harassment acquitted on appeal

This Monday, November 6, the Court of Appeal of Nancy finally acquitted the four teenagers tried for the molestation of Lucas, 13, who committed suicide last January.

His story caused a national sensation. On January 7, Lucas, a 13-year-old student, committed suicide after experiencing homophobic harassment from classmates.

A case that sparked a wave of emotion in the country. But this Monday, November 6, the final sentence arrived. Finally the Court of Appeal of Nancy relaxed on appeal the four students tried for acts of “ harassment leading to suicide » by Lucas, announced theFrench media agency.

No “causal link” between the teenagers’ comments and Lucas’ suicide

If the Court were to note the character ” hateful » the comments made by middle school students, he underlines “the absence of demonstrated effects” of the controversial statements of the four defendants” on Lucas’ mental health »and the absence of “ causal link” between these and suicide, according to the decision consulted by AFP. Therefore, harassment of Lucas is not recognized by law.

A decision that is not without surprises. Last April the Prosecutor’s Office had not requested the recognition of harassment as the cause of the suicide, thus contradicting its own conclusions reached at the end of the investigations.
